EAC Regional STI Conference

Conference theme: “Accelerating development and diffusion of Science, technology and Innovation solutions for a resilient East Africa”

CALL FOR ABSTRACT

The East African Community (EAC) Regional Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Conference is a biennial Conference jointly organized by the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA).

EASTECO and IUCEA invite abstracts for the 3rd biennial EAC Regional STI Conference. The conference will be convened under the overarching theme “Accelerating development and diffusion of Science, Technology, and Innovation solutions for a resilient East Africa”.

The conference will be structured into four thematic areas, namely:

  1. Agricultural Productivity, Resilience, and Food Security.
  2. Health and Nutrition.
  3. Natural Resources Management.
  4. Information Communication Technology and Digital Economy.

The conference will be a multifaceted platform bringing together policymakers, industry players, academia, researchers, innovators, students, development partners, and other actors in the STI ecosystem in the EAC region and beyond. It will provide an opportunity for sharing experiences and best practices, strengthening collaborations, and stimulating applications of STI outputs that facilitate regional integration and development.

 GUIDE TO AUTHORS

Abstract Format: Each abstract shall not exceed 300 words, and shall be in MS Word, New Times Roman, font size 12, with no more than 5 keywords. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 January 2024. Successful abstracts will be published in the pre-conference book of abstracts.

For Accepted abstracts: Authors of accepted abstracts shall be required to submit full conference papers and PowerPoint presentations before the conference. In addition, authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit their papers to be published in the East African Journal of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

Submission: The abstracts shall be submitted electronically through the conference webpage, not later than 15 January 2024, using the link: https://www.iucea.org/xw3j

Abstracts will be peer-reviewed, and acceptance will be based on content relevance and overall programme balance in the thematic areas.

The theme: “Accelerating development and diffusion of Science, technology and Innovation solutions for a resilient East Africa”

INTRODUCTION

The East African Community (EAC) Regional Science Technology and Innovation (STI) Conference is a biennial Conference jointly organized by the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA).

The 3rd EAC Regional STI Conference is convened under the overarching theme of “Accelerating development and diffusion of Science, Technology, and Innovation solutions for a resilient East Africa”. This conference is an avenue for sharing experiences, and best practices, strengthening collaborations, and stimulating applications of STI outputs that facilitate regional integration and development. This builds on the deliberations and success of the previous conferences, which were held in the year 2019 and 2021 in Kampala, Uganda, and Bujumbura, Burundi respectively.

The Conference will bring together diverse actors in the STI system, including policymakers, industry players, academia, researchers, innovators, students, and development partners. The Conference will be a multifaceted platform bringing together policymakers, industry players, academia, researchers, innovators, students, development partners, and other actors in the STI ecosystem in the EAC region and beyond. The conference shall consist of high-level policymaker interaction sessions, keynote presentations, plenary paper presentations, panel discussions, and exhibitions. All full paper submissions in the conference will be peer-reviewed and evaluated based on originality, technical and/or research depth, accuracy, and relevance to the conference theme and topics. The accepted peer-reviewed papers will be published in the East African Journal of Science, Technology, and Innovation (EAJSTI) to boost the dissemination of research findings within the region and improve regional visibility and competitiveness.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the 3rd EAC Regional STI Conference are:

  • To provide a platform for information and knowledge sharing through conference presentations, exhibitions and publications;
  • To enhance the dissemination of research results through publication in peer-reviewed journal;
  • To stimulate and promote networking, partnerships and collaboration among the scientific community in the EAC region;
  • To promote the uptake of research and development products and services among STI stakeholders.

THEMATIC AREAS

Abstracts shall be submitted in aspects of the following subthemes under each thematic area but not limited to areas specified:

Thematic Area 1: Agricultural Productivity, Resilience and Food Security

Sub-themes:

  • Climate Change Mitigation and Carbon Sequestration;
  • Precision Agriculture Technologies and Data Science in Agriculture;
  • Genetic and Genomic Research for Resilient Crop Varieties;
  • Soil Sciences for improved Soil Health;
  • Food Systems, including supply chains, distribution, and waste management; and
  • Value Addition and Agribusiness.

Mode of the Conference: This conference will be held in a hybrid mode through face-to-face and virtual platforms.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE CONFERENCE

The conference will comprise of high-level policy dialogue, panel discussions, parallel presentations showcasing events/Innovation exhibitions and ministerial sessions. The details of different sessions are:

  1. High-level policy dialogue session: This will be organized involving senior government officials and Ministers from ministries responsible for STI. The interactive high-level policy dialogue will focus on broad and cross-cutting issues and strategic direction including opportunities and transformative levers, partnerships, commitments, actions and other measures to accelerate STI applications/solutions implementations.
  2. Plenary Sessions: A general plenary discussion will be held at the end of each session where key issues will be discussed, and session recommendations derived to inform conference resolutions.
  3. Exhibition session: Special sessions for exhibitions of scientific innovations and technologies will be interspersed within the thematic sessions, in which participants will be allowed to visit exhibition booths of their interest to interact and learn.
  4. Ministerial terminal session: A terminal ministerial session will be held to present consolidated recommendations to a technical policy panel for a roundtable discussion to come up with conference resolutions. A detailed program will be developed to guide the conference structure
  5. Special sessions and events: Special sessions will be held on request from partners. This will include a youth engagement on technologies and innovation of the future and a session on entrepreneurship promotion through education and research and development. Side events by partners will be held for special and specific sessions.

TARGETED PARTICIPANTS

The conference will be open to all stakeholders including EAC Partner States, the African Union, Regional Economic Communities, Civil society, business and industry organization, academic and research institutions and development partners.

The programme shall consist of high-level policymaker interaction sessions, keynote presentations, plenary paper presentations, panel discussions, and exhibitions.
