IUCEA appoints New Staff
Kampala, 31st January 2023 – The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is pleased to announce the appointment of new staff in a bid to strengthen its capacity to coordinate the development of higher education and research in the East African Community (EAC). The new staff include Prof. Idris Ahamada Rai, the Deputy Executive; Prof. Meshack Amos Obonyo, Senior Principal, Exchange and Partnerships and Mr, Lusajo Jimmy Kibonde, the Principal Internal Auditor.
Commenting of the appointments, Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona, the IUCEA Executive Secretary, said, “the appointments will strengthen IUCEA capacity to deliver on its mandate, which in the context of Article 5 and 102 of the EAC Treaty, is to advise, develop and coordinate matters related to higher education and research in the EAC.”
Staff profiles
Prof. Idris A. Rai, Deputy Executive Secretary
Prof. Idris A. Rai is the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA). He is a professor of telecommunication networks. Prior to joining IUCEA in January 2023, he had served in a number of national, regional and global academic and research institutions at various capacities, namely as a Vice Chancellor of State University of Zanzibar (2011-2019), Deputy Dean at Makerere University (2009-2011), a member of governing boards and various committees of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), UbuntuNet Alliance (AU), African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD), Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU), Inter-University Council of East Africa, and a member of a number of university councils. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science and Networking from Telecom Paris Tech in France, and has Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Bilkent University and Bogazici Universities respectively – both in Turkey.
Prof. Meshack Amos Obonyo, Senior Principal, Exchange and Partnerships
Prof. Meshack Obonyo Joins IUCEA as Senior Principal, Exchange and Partnerships. He is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry. Prof. Obonyo has Served in Egerton University Senate for a period of 9 years, in addition to Serving as the University’s Deputy Director Quality Assurance.
In addition, Prof. Obonyo Served as the Head of Department of Biochemistry for 6 Years. Other responsibilities that Prof Obonyo has held include being the Liaison Officer to the Kenya National Qualifications Authority and being the University Data Officer to the Commission for University Education. He has taken diverse trainings in the Quality Assurance, Credit Accumulation and Transfer Systems, and Recognition of Prior Learning. Prof Obonyo has also undertaken various consultancies and Institutional Audits in the Area of Higher Education and Training. He holds Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry from North West University, South Africa, a Master of Science Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and a Bachelor of Science Biochemistry and Chemistry from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
Mr. Lusajo Jimmy Kibonde, the Principal Internal Auditor
Mr. Lusajo Jimmy Kibonde is the Principal Internal Auditor at Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA). He is a certified accountant and internal audit specialist with over 10 years’ experience in internal audit and accounting. Prior to his appointment he was the Internal Auditor at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). He also worked as an Accountant with Nampak (T) Ltd and Unitrans (T) Ltd. He holds a Master of Science (Accounting and Finance) and Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting). He is a Certified Public Accountant (Tanzania), Diploma In International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS).
