Objectives of the Quality Assurance Unit

The functions of the Quality assurance Unit at the IUCEA Secretariat include the following among others:
  1. Develop a regional quality assessment tool for use by universities in East Africa.
  2. Institutionalize internal quality assurance mechanisms for universities in East Africa.
  3. Pilot the assessment tool in selected university programmes.
  4. Develop regional benchmarks for specific programmes.
  5. Build capacity in Quality Assurance at institutional, national and regional level.
  6. Mainstream the application of QA tool in all institutional programmes, and
  7. Mainstream the lessons learnt in the use of the regional QA tool into the national accreditation and quality assurance processes
  8. To facilitate the development of effective regional quality assurance mechanisms
  9. To provide an integrating platform for dialogue and action to develop strong regional harmonization initiatives on quality assurance, benchmarks and credit accumulation and transfer systems.
  10. To facilitate and promote mobility of students, graduates, and academic staff across the region;
  11. To bridge the gap between disparate educational systems by coordinating initiatives of national accreditation bodies and regional bodies to maximise their successes and address their challenges;
  12. To ensure that East African higher education institutions become an increasingly dynamic force in the international higher education arena.
