EAC Secretary General Visits IUCEA Secretariat
Urged staff to advocate for the developed instruments for harmonization of higher education to attract more members.
Inter-University Council for East Africa Kampala, Uganda 14 th May 2021: The East African Community Secretary General, Hon (Dr.) Peter Mathuki has called on the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) to advocate for the developed instruments for harmonization of higher education to attract more members.
Addressing the Management and Staff at the IUCEA Headquarters, Kampala, Uganda, the Secretary General urged the staff to use the opportunity of the IUCEA higher education interventions in the EAC region, which are currently very crucial to the development of higher education sector, and for that reason attract more universities to become IUCEA members.
On training and capacity building of staff, Dr. Peter Mathuki encouraged the IUCEA to take the leading role in training and building capacity of the staff of EAC Secretariat, its organs and institutions by developing short courses. “Why can we not use our own higher education institutions for developing short courses and train our own staff?” asked the Secretary General, assuring the IUCEA that he would be the first one to attend the first course designed and conducted by one of the East African universities.
Dr. Mathuki urged also IUCEA to look into designing university programmes that are demand-driven by putting also into consideration unique programmes to support business people in the EAC Region together with working on researches that can contribute to the development of vaccines for COVID-19 and other diseases.
Dr. Mathuki urged staff to give maximum support the new Executive Secretary Prof. Banyankimbona and the Community in general by working hard and being ambassadors of the Community. “We work as a team and the Vision of the Community is one” said Dr. Mathuki.
On his part, the Executive Secretary of IUCEA Prof. Gaspard Banyankimbona through
Dr. Cosam Joseph, EASTRIP Coordinator, briefed the Secretary General on the
functions and roles of IUCEA, achievements made and challenges facing the institution.
Prof. Banyankimbona thanked the Secretary General for visiting the IUCEA at the right moment, when he had just joined the IUCEA in early April, 2021 as the 5 th IUCEA Executive Secretary. Prof Banyankimbona revealed to the Secretary General that IUCEA is in the process of closing the Financial Year 2020/2021 while planning and aligning of the IUCEA future activities to the Rolling strategic Plan 2021/2026 are ongoing, including the initial processes of the construction of Phase II of IUCEA
Headquarters.
The Secretary General was accompanied by EALA Speaker Rt. Hon. Ngoga Martins, Judge President Justice Nestor Kayobera and the Deputy Secretary General in charge of the Productive and Social Sectors, Hon. Christophe Bazivamo and other EAC Secretariat Staff.
