Announcement of an upcoming opportunity for:

  1. Universities in east Africa to host students under the east African community scholarship programme
  2. Scholarships for students interested in pursuing masters studies within the east African community

Theme: Leadership to Foster Regional Integration

Financial Cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the East African Community (EAC) – EAC Scholarship Programme

The Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is an Institution of the East African Community (EAC) responsible for the coordination of the development of higher education and research within the Community. One of the functions of IUCEA provided for in the IUCEA Act 2009 is to advise the EAC and Partner States on all matters pertaining to higher education, especially those related to the operationalization of EAC Common Higher Education Area. The mission of IUCEA is to encourage and develop mutually beneficial collaboration between member universities and governments and other organizations, both public and private.

In 2018, IUCEA entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kreditanstalt Für Wiederaufbau (German Development Bank – KFW) geared towards the training of students within the East African Community, the eventual goal being to enhance Leadership to Foster Regional Integration. This goal will be partly achieved through the establishment of academic collaboration and an exchange programme between universities within the EAC region, by having students cross from their countries to study in other countries within the region. Students may also study from their own countries.

IUCEA therefore, wishes to inform:

1.Universities within the EAC region that there will be an opportunity in the next few weeks for them to apply to host students under the East African Scholarship Programme. The areas of study have tentatively been pre-selected as Mathematics, Engineering, Informatics, Science, Technology (MINT) and Business Science;

2.Students within the EAC region who wish to pursue their masters’ studies (in any of the above pre-selected study areas) from 2019 and would like to obtain a scholarship to prepare for application in a few weeks.

An official call for applications by universities and students, together with the selection criteria, will be released when this window of opportunity opens in the next few weeks. Universities and students interested in this opportunity are encouraged to prepare to submit their applications when the call is eventually advertised. This scholarship programme will commence in the 2019/2020 academic year.

IUCEA and KFW believe in equal opportunities. Males and females; private and public universities are all encouraged to apply.
