Call for Application for KDU Global Partial Undergraduate Scholarship for Self Sponsored East Africans at Kyungdong University Global Campus, South Korea (Extra 1st Cohort) Spring 2025

Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) is an institution of the East African Community (EAC) responsible for the coordination of higher educational development and research in the EAC region. One of the functions of IUCEA is to advise the EAC and the partner states on all matters regarding higher education including the operationalization of the EAC Common Higher Education Area. The mission of IUCEA is to encourage and develop mutually beneficial collaborations between and among the member universities, governments, and other organizations, both public and private.

KDU is a private university fully accredited by the Korean Ministry of Education and certified by the International Education Quality Assurance System. KDU Global is located in Goseong (Gangwondo province) – one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in South Korea with exceptional natural surroundings. KDU Global has established and facilitates the worldwide network of Global Academic Collaboration Centers (GACC) offering thousands of students internationally competitive education and countless global opportunities based on a common academic platform.

The main purpose of KDU Global Supplemental Scholarships is to promote sustainable and inclusive development in the EAC member countries by nurturing and delivering highly demanded professionals in the areas of business administration, hotel management and tourism, Korean Studies, and computing technologies. Over 80 students from the EAC nations are studying at KDU Global. KDU Global and IUCEA have jointly committed to expanding the GACC network throughout East Africa and exposing the talented youth of the communities to global opportunities.

During the selection of the previous Cohorts, other qualifying applicants were left out due to limitations in number of scholarships offered per year. The purpose of this Call is therefore to offer partial scholarship to interested applicants for KDU GLOBAL SUPPLEMENTAL UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP  to study at Kyungdong University, South Korea, commencing in March 2025 for study of Bachelor’s degree in; Smart Computing, Business Administration, Hotel Management, Artificial Intelligence, and Korean Studies.

  • Target Level: Undergraduate degree
  • Majors offered: Smart Computing, Business Administration, Hotel Management, Artificial Intelligence, and Korean Studies
  • Medium of instruction:
    • English medium (Smart Computing, Business Administration, Hotel Management, Artificial Intelligence)
    • Korean medium (Korean Studies)
  • Expected commencement: Spring 2025
  1. PARTIAL Scholarship Component:

PART 1- KYUNGDONG UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS:

  • SEMESTER I Scholarship:
  • Full tuition fee of $5000 for the first semester (by KDU Global).
  • On-campus accommodation fee of $1000 for the first semester (by KDU Global)

*Students/Parents provide for other initial and personal expenses (e.g., airfare, application fee, health insurance).

  • SEMESTER II Scholarship and onwards

The students cover the dormitory expenses and tuition for subsequent semesters.

The tuition to be paid after “KDU Global PARTIAL Scholarship” depends on students’ academic performance in their first semester at KDU Global:

  • 30% scholarship for 75-79 average mark: remaining balance $3500
  • 50% scholarship for 80-89 average mark: remaining balance $2500
  • 70% scholarship for 90-94 average mark: remaining balance $1500,
  • 100% scholarship for 95 or above of average mark: remaining balance is Nil.

*KDU Global provides part-time job assistance during the study program.

  1. Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet the following general eligibility requirements:

  1. Citizen and resident of East African Community Partner States (Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Republic of Somalia).
  2. Completion of the pre-university level of education in the home country in 2022 or 2023.
  3. Excellent academic performance records with a minimum of a ‘B’ in all mathematics and English modules.
  4. Selected applicants are required to present a minimum of IELTS 5.5 or IBT 71 of English proficiency prior to their final admission to KDU Global. Applicants whose first language is English might be exempted from this requirement. For Korean medium (Korean Studies), minimum of TOPIK Level 3 of Korean proficiency.
  5. No older than 22 years of age.
  6. Selection Process

All applicants will be subjected to a merit-based two-stage selection process.

Stage I: IUCEA shall conduct the preliminary selection of candidates. Interested applicants must submit either electronic or hard copies of the following documents to the IUCEA Office in Kampala, Uganda:

  1. Complete the electronic form on this link (Link)
  2. Submit the hardcopy Application Form (Link to download)
  3. Statement of Interest to the Executive Secretary of IUCEA
  4. Upload the required documents below:
  5. Recent passport photograph in color with a clear shot of face and upper shoulders.
  6. Comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) including names and contacts of two references.
  7. Two letters of reference (the same referees as in the CV, one of the referees should be the Head of the Institution where the student completed his/her secondary school).
  8. Certified copies of national pre-university certificates and transcripts (Provisional Results will only be temporarily acceptable if endorsed by the Issuing National Agency).
  9. Evidence of citizenship and residency of a Partner State in the East African Community: passport/National ID and residency attestation is required.

All documents must be combined into one PDF file and submitted to IUCEA by November 15, 2024.

Stage II: KDU Global will conduct individual assessments and confirm the final selections. Candidates might be required to submit additional documents and designated forms if deemed necessary.

Final selection notices will only be sent to successful candidates by December 6, 2024.
