The East African Community (EAC) is an Inter-Governmental Organization composed of six Partner States namely Republic of Burundi, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, and Republic of Uganda. The Partner States, guided by Article 118 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC, agreed to cooperate on matters of health. This regional cooperation framework is of great importance at this material point in time when the region is experiencing an increasing burden of disease requiring specialized amidst resources constraints. In an effort to collectively address the attendant challenges, the EAC successfully operationalized the following five (5) EAC Regional Centres of Excellence for Skills and Tertiary Education in Higher Medical and Health Sciences Education, Health Services and Research:
- East African Center of Excellence for Nephrology and Urology – Republic of Kenya
- East African Center of Excellence for Cardiovascular Health Sciences – United Republic of Tanzania
- East African Center of Excellence for Oncology – Republic of Uganda
- East African Center of Excellence in Biomedical Engineering, eHealth and health rehabilitation – Republic of Rwanda
- East African Center of Excellence for vaccines, Immunization and Health Supply Chain Management – Republic of Rwanda
- East African Center of Excellence for Nutritional Sciences – Republic of Burundi
