In East Africa regional higher education interactions and cooperation originates from the pre-independence era when Makerere University College was the only higher education institution in the region serving students from Kenya, the then Tanganyika, and Zanzibar in East Africa

The new Executive Secretary, Professor Alexandre Lyambabaje assumed duty on 6th November 2015 to lead the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) for the next five years.
This follows the end of tenure of Prof. Mayunga H. H. Nkunya who led the institution since 2010. Prof. Lyambabaje brings vast experience from Rwanda where he has worked in several Ministries including the Ministry of Commerce, Tourism Industry, Investments Promotion and Cooperatives as Cabinet Minister.
Inter-University Council for East Africa will hold University Students Forum, Tanzania Chapter on 4th – 5th May 2015 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Students will be informed on EAC mandate; the roles and functions of IUCEA and support offered by IUCEA to universities and other stakeholders; Harmonization of education systems in EAC: Opportunities, Challenges; and opportunity for regional integration through research.
During the presentations, students will be provided with information on the ongoing initiatives to promote higher education and research in the region as well as on the achievements in quality assurance and harmonization of higher education to transform EAC into a common higher education area by 2015. Initiatives towards promotion of research on regional issues will be also presented. Read More
