The East African Higher Education Quality Assurance Network (EAQAN), a network of quality assurance practitioners in East Africa, is a pleased to announce a call for abstracts for its sixth Annual Regional Quality Assurance Conference 2016. The conference seeks to provide a unique and an important opportunity for quality assurance practitioners, senior administrators of Higher Education Institutions, executive members of national accreditation bodies, higher education researchers, faculty and policy makers to share ideas on quality assurance issues, systems, practices and challenges in promoting quality higher education in East Africa. The new Executive Secretary, Professor Alexandre Lyambabaje assumed duty on 6th November 2015 to lead the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) for the next five years.
This follows the end of tenure of Prof. Mayunga H. H. Nkunya who led the institution since 2010. Prof. Lyambabaje brings vast experience from Rwanda where he has worked in several Ministries including the Ministry of Commerce, Tourism Industry, Investments Promotion and Cooperatives as Cabinet Minister.
Inter-University Council for East Africa will hold University Students Forum, Tanzania Chapter on 4th – 5th May 2015 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Students will be informed on EAC mandate; the roles and functions of IUCEA and support offered by IUCEA to universities and other stakeholders; Harmonization of education systems in EAC: Opportunities, Challenges; and opportunity for regional integration through research.
During the presentations, students will be provided with information on the ongoing initiatives to promote higher education and research in the region as well as on the achievements in quality assurance and harmonization of higher education to transform EAC into a common higher education area by 2015. World Bank to Fund it under Regional Higher Education Project
IUCEA to coordinate the project
The World Bank (WB) in partnership with Eastern and Southern African countries is developing a regional higher education centers of excellence project to promote regional specialization and excellence among participating universities within areas that address particular common development challenges; and strengthen the capacities of these universities to deliver high quality training and applied research.
The main objective of the project is to meet the demand for skills required for Africa's development in areas such as agriculture, energy, extractive industries, etc., while strengthening the innovation capacity of the best African higher education institutions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and other relevant disciplines. This project [the Eastern and Southern Africa Higher Education Centers of Excellence Project (ACE II)] covers 10 countries in the region – Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe that have expressed interest in participating in ACE II.
