IUCEA is currently coordinating the following research programmes;-

The Programme funds multi-disciplinary teams working on different sites in fi ve partner states of the East African Community. It was designed as an opportunity for joint research that would contribute towards sustainable natural resource management and wealth creation in the Lake Victoria Basin. SIDA/SAREC is the funding agency.

The Bio-Earn Programme

The East African Regional Programme and Research Network for Biotechnology, Biosafety and Biotechnology Policy Development (BIO-EARN) was initiated in 1998 to develop human capital and infrastructure to enable the region acquire its own capacity to conduct strategic bio-technology research in agriculture, environment and industrial sub-sectors of the economy. The programme aims at strengthening national and institutional abilities to assess, develop and implement effective policies for technology development and dissemination as well as facilitate the establishment of bio-safety regulatory structures that will empower four Eastern African countries, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia to meet the challenges of modern biotechnology and assist them in realizing its potential under local conditions in the region.
